Solar first, a battery a few years later when the feed-in tariff drops again, a charger when the car arrives. It is the common path, and it costs more than doing it once — in labour, in switchboard work, and in hardware chosen before anyone knew what it would eventually have to talk to.

Why one pass is cheaper

Panels and batteries cost roughly what they cost whenever you buy them. What you avoid by doing it together is repeating the expensive parts of the job three times.

One trip up the ladder

Three separate installs means three sets of scaffolding or roof access, three switchboard visits and three commissioning appointments. Most of the labour cost in solar is getting a qualified person to your house, not the minutes they spend there.

The switchboard gets sorted once

A battery backup circuit, an EV charger and a new inverter all want something from the board. Doing them together means one upgrade, designed for the finished system rather than for whichever stage happened to come first.

One warranty, one number to call

When the inverter, battery and charger come from the same manufacturer, a fault is somebody’s problem rather than an argument between two vendors with different call centres.

One app that agrees with itself

Generation, storage, household load and charging in one place, from one data source. Two monitoring platforms will always disagree slightly, and reconciling them is nobody’s idea of a good evening.

The argument against

Doing it all at once is not right for everyone.

It is a larger cheque, and it commits you to a battery size and a charger before you have watched a year of your own data. If you are not certain about the car, or you have just moved in and do not yet know how the house behaves in summer, staging it is a perfectly sensible choice.

The middle path most people take: fit a hybrid inverter and size the switchboard for the finished system now, then add the battery and charger when you are ready. You pay a little more today and avoid the expensive rework later.
